| Wren’s Nest Mid-week Geoconservation Days | |
|---|---|
| The dates below on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in November and December have been sent to Andy by Wren’s Nest Senior Warden Ian Beech. These are sessions when BCGS members are invited to take part in geoconservation work at the Wren’s Nest. This is a new venture to try and get around the problem of warden availability at the weekends. Please just turn up if you are available at any of these times. | |
| Directed by the reserve wardens. Meet at 9.30 at the wardens’ office, at the end of Fossil View (the road into the new housing estate, site of the former Mons Hill College). (GR: SO 93699 92118). Park along Fossil View. The day will involve scrub clearance. Bring gloves, stout footwear and a packed lunch. Wardens will provide tools, hard hats if necessary and a hot drink. Finish around 2.30. Monday 19 October (Indoor Meeting): 'The Ediacaran Biota of Charnwood Forest: the behind the scenes story'. Speaker: Dr. Mike Howe (Chief Curator and Head of the National Geological Repository at the British Geological Survey). There are several speakers talking on the results of the work and the implications for the origins of multicellular organisms, but I believe that original discovery of the fossils around 1849 and their subsequent erroneous discrediting, plus the pivotal role played by a local society – Section C, LLPS (Leicester Literary & Philosophical Society) – in reinvigorating Ediacaran research in the UK, makes an equally interesting story.
