Bullring<\/strong><br \/>\nThis area of Birmingham has been a market place since Peter de Bermingham bought a licence to trade in the 12th Century. Many of us who knew Birmingham in the later half of the 20th Century will remember the Bull Ring Centre well, a functional if not beautiful architectural conglomeration. Plans were in place by the late 1990s to redevelop this area and demolition and building works began in 2000 with the mall opening three years later, reincarnated as the one-word Bullring. The mall is designed by retail specialist architects Benoy Group. Foster (2007) remarks that the new complex is <em>\u2018retail architecture at an uncomfortable moment of transition\u2019<\/em>. Nevertheless, shopping malls are always good places to see decorative polished stone, and this makes the Bullring well worth a visit. The stone contract was carried out by engineers Chapman Taylor along with Stone Cladding International, a firm well-known for supplying particularly decorative, arguably \u2018glitzy\u2019 stones, many from exotic localities. The Mall is arranged on three levels which are continuous on the Lower Level but split into two \u2018wings\u2019 on the Middle and Upper Levels by St Martin&#8217;s Walk leading down to the church of St Martin\u2019s. From the entrance, walk on to the junction with the main concourse (at Costa Coffee), looking at the decorative paving as you go (<strong id=\"05a\">stop 5a<\/strong>).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color:darkgreen\">Cinza Rajado<\/strong> is named by Stone Cladding International as a stone used in the Mall. This marketing name is mainly used for a Brazilian marble but it is applied here to the yellow and black striped gneiss which is used for some areas of flooring, including the area between St. Martin&#8217;s Square entrance and the junction with the main concourse (at Costa Coffee). This is almost certainly derived from Brazil and almost certainly <span title=\"The Archaean represents the time period from 4,031 to 2,500Ma.\" rel=\"tooltip\" class=\"tooltipred\">Archaean<\/span> in age but its origin is unknown. \u2018Rajado\u2019 is Portuguese for \u2018brindled\u2019 and that is certainly a good description of this stone (NB. \u2018cinza\u2019 means grey).<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_4198\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4198\" src=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200316_115731cc-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"A highly fossiliferous Yana Limestone paving slab\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200316_115731cc-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200316_115731cc-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200316_115731cc-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200316_115731cc-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200316_115731cc.jpg 1412w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A highly fossiliferous Yana Limestone paving slab<\/p><\/div><em id=\"05b\">Turn right onto the main concourse and head towards the roundel outside Selfridges.  This is a good place to get your bearings and survey some of the main stone types used in the Bullring (<strong>stop 5b<\/strong>).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The main paving stone used throughout the complex is a yellow-coloured Spanish, mid-Cretaceous limestone (c.125Ma). This is generally marketed as <strong style=\"color:darkgreen\">Yana Limestone<\/strong> which is a corruption of one of the places of origin, La Jana near Tarragona in north-eastern Spain. It is worked on a large scale from the Aptian Benassal Formation. Texturally this unit is variable in both colour and fossil content. Colour ranges from yellow through cream and even pale pink and the stone is sometimes mottled with these colours. It is variably fossiliferous, with fossils \u2013 dominantly the oyster <em>Toucasia sp.<\/em> \u2013 concentrated in shell lags. Gastropods and ammonites are also present. Some slabs are entirely devoid of fossils, others are packed full with them. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color:darkgreen\">Rosso Tigrato<\/strong> is another metamorphic rock, this time from Brazil. It has a tiger-striped appearance, due to being composed of a finely banded pink and black gneiss with narrow injections of granite which are rotated parallel to the foliation. This stone is used in decorative paving in the mall, notably here at the roundel (<strong>stop 5b<\/strong>) and around the nearby escalators (<strong id=\"05c\">stop 5c<\/strong>). This stone is a migmatite, a \u2018Juparana\u2019 with a granitic composition; the pink colouration being imparted by potassic feldspars and biotite as the main mafic phase. It is from the Archaean S\u00e3o Francisco Craton, quarried near Ruy Barbosa in Bahia State. The S\u00e3o Francisco Craton (c.2.5\u20132.0Ga) is an ancient remnant of the Earth\u2019s continental lithosphere covering a vast area near the NE coast of Brazil, about 1000 miles north of  Rio de Janeiro).<div id=\"attachment_2304\" style=\"width: 634px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2304\" src=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/13.jpg\" alt=\"Rosso Tigrato and V\u00e5nga Granite are used in this roundel.\" width=\"624\" height=\"469\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/13.jpg 624w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/13-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/13-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2304\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rosso Tigrato and V\u00e5nga Granite are used in this roundel, outside Selfridges, Lower Level<\/p><\/div><div id=\"attachment_4581\" style=\"width: 342px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4581\" src=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_094724colour120mmshort.jpg\" alt=\"Rosso Tigrato and V\u00e5nga Granite \" width=\"332\" height=\"469\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4581\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_094724colour120mmshort.jpg 689w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_094724colour120mmshort-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_094724colour120mmshort-106x150.jpg 106w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 332px) 100vw, 332px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rosso Tigrato and V\u00e5nga Granite, Lower Level<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both\";>The stone used as the centre of the roundel (and by the escalators, <strong>stop 5c<\/strong>) is <strong style=\"color:darkgreen\">V\u00e5nga Granite<\/strong>, a rich wine-red granite from Sk\u00e5ne in southern Sweden. The V\u00e5nga Pluton is one of a suite of 1.4Ga granites intruded into the Blekinge Province of Mesoproterozoic metasediments. The granite is strongly deformed, and this can be seen from the elongated, red potassic feldspars and intervening \u2018schlieren\u2019 of black biotite mica.<div id=\"attachment_2306\" style=\"width: 634px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2306\" src=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/14.jpg\" alt=\"Rosso Tigrato and V\u00e5nga Granite\" width=\"624\" height=\"261\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/14.jpg 624w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/14-150x63.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/14-300x125.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2306\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rosso Tigrato and V\u00e5nga Granite<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>This is a very popular stone, used for cladding buildings but also for paving both internally and externally. It is extractable in large slabs and blocks, due to the outcrop having a system of widely spaced joints. V\u00e5nga is also used for the cylindrical seats on the Upper Level of the Mall and near the Lower Level exit from the Mall onto Smallbrook Queensway and the Bus Station outside Grand Central.<\/p>\n<p><i>Retrace your steps along the concourse as far as the first flight of escalators (<b>stop 5c<\/b>).<\/i><\/p>\n<p>These escalators are decoratively surrounded by Rosso Tigrato with a lozenge-shaped feature in V\u00e5nga granite between them. The escalator  housing is faced with Yana Limestone, providing an opportunity to see some fossils without looking down.<\/p>\n<p><em id=\"05d\">Move on to the next flight of escalators, where two contrasting stones are used as paving and to face the escalator housing (<strong id=\"05d\">stop 5d<\/strong>).<\/em><br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_4587\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4587\" src=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_095446-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"Vizag Blue and Orissa Blue\" width=\"1024\" height=\"498\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_095446-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_095446-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_095446-150x73.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_095446-768x373.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_095446-1536x747.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_095446-2048x996.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4587\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vizag Blue and Orissa Blue, between escalators, stop 5d, Lower Level<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<strong style=\"color:darkgreen\">Vizag Blue<\/strong> is an attractive, dark purplish-coloured metamorphic rock. It is used around the escalators here,  and for decorative features on the Upper Level of the Mall. It is a <span title=\"Garnets are a group of silicate minerals that have been used since the Bronze Age as gemstones and abrasives.\" rel=\"tooltip\" class=\"tooltipred\">garnet<\/span>-bearing <span title=\"Migmatite is a rock that is a mixture of metamorphic rock and igneous rock. It is created when a metamorphic rock such as gneiss partially melts, and then that melt recrystallizes into an igneous rock, creating a mixture of the unmelted metamorphic part with the recrystallized igneous part.\" rel=\"tooltip\" class=\"tooltipred\">migmatitic<\/span> gneiss (c.1.5\u20132.0Ga) from the Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt of north east India. It is quarried in several localities around the towns of Srikakulam, Tekkali and Patapatnam in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is named after the local civic centre, Visakhapatnam, which is often shortened to \u2018Vizag\u2019.<br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_4585\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4585\" src=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_100449colour120-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"Orissa Blue\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_100449colour120-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_100449colour120-1024x701.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_100449colour120-150x103.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_100449colour120-768x526.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bcgs.info\/pub\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200229_100449colour120.jpg 1417w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4585\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Orissa Blue, rich in red garnets<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<strong style=\"color:darkgreen\">Orissa Blue<\/strong> is the trade name of the accompanying stone.  The Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt extends northwards through Andhra Pradesh into Orissa (Odisha) State, parallel to the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Orissa Blue is paler in colour but essentially the same mineralogy (and age) as Vizag Blue. Texturally it is different and distinctive, with large, brick-shaped <span title=\"A porphyroblast is a large mineral crystal in a metamorphic rock which has grown within the finer grained groundmass.\" rel=\"tooltip\" class=\"tooltipred\">porphyroblasts<\/span> of plagioclase aligned in the gneissose matrix. It too is very rich in red garnets.<\/p>\n<p>The migmatites are part of a suite of very high grade metamorphic rocks of charnockitic composition, containing the minerals garnet, plagioclase and potassic feldspars, biotite, orthopyroxene and opalescent quartz. The Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt represents a series of deep crustal rocks accreted during multiple orogenic events during the Palaeoproterozoic, between 1.5 and 2 billion years ago. Turn round and head towards the end of the concourse.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The yellow fossiliferous Yana Limestone again forms the bulk of the paving, and there is continuity with the Lower Level design with further diamond-shaped features using Vizag Blue and Orissa Blue stone making attractive use of the two stones, contrasted against the Yana Limestone.. <\/p>\n<p><em>Exit the main concourse of the Bullring heading towards a conspicuous blue stained glass window.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Note that in this area there are some round stone seats clad in V\u00e5nga Granite, and some square ones clad in Orissa Blue.
