Programme of Events

Black Country Geological Society’s indoor meetings will be held during the winter months at the Abbey Room at the Dudley Archives, Tipton Road, Dudley, DY1 4SQ.

Unless otherwise stated, the Abbey Room and Zoom meetings will normally open at 7.30pm and lectures commence at 8.00pm.

    Geoconservation Day: Portway Hill, Rowley Please note change of date and place.   10.00 - 1.30

    Saturday 11th March 2023 (Geoconservation Day): Portway Hill, Rowley. In collaboration with the Friend’s of Portway Hill Group and the B&BC Wildlife Trust. Meet at St Brades Close just off Tower Road at 09:45 for 10.00 (Grid ref: SO 974 893), nearest PC: B69 1NH. Directions: from Birmingham New Road (A4123) turn left on to Tower Road if coming from Birmingham, right if coming from Wolverhampton. Just after Bury Hill park, turn left onto St Brades Close. Wear old work clothes, waterproofs and stout footwear. Please bring gloves. Tools provided but do feel free to bring your own. Also bring a packed lunch, hot drinks provided. Finish around 13.30.

    AGM followed by: Celebrating the Origins of Animal Life: Building a UNESCO Global Geopark in Charnwood Forest, UK   7.00 -

    Monday 20 March (Indoor Meeting, 7.00 for 7.30 start): AGM followed by: 'Celebrating the Origins of Animal Life: Building a UNESCO Global Geopark in Charnwood Forest, UK'. Speaker: Jack Matthews (Geoheritage Conservation and Interpretation Officer for the Charnwood Forest Geopark, UK). Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire is host to some of the oldest animal fossils in the world. This presentation will outline the internationally significant geodiversity of Charnwood Forest - including the outstanding ancient fossils - and the ways it has shaped the landscape, communities, and people of Britain's 'unexpected upland'.

    Field Visit: Wroxeter Roman City

    Field Visit: Wroxeter Roman City   10.30 - 4.30

    Saturday 1 April (Field Visit): Wroxeter Roman City. Led by David Pannett (Shropshire Geological Society). Meet in the car park at Wroxeter Roman City, near Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY5 6PJ, (GR: SJ 565087, from the Black Country, follow the old A5 Watling Street), for 10.30.  We will look at the building stones used within the city, where they came from and what happened to them after the city was abandoned.  Lunch break in Atcham, followed by afternoon visits to local churches and Acton Burnell.  There is an entrance fee for Wroxeter Roman City (an English Heritage site). Bring a packed lunch and comfortable footwear. Aim to finish around 4.30.

    The Newt Route

    The Newt Route   7.30 -

    Monday 17 April (Indoor Meeting): N.B. Change of Subject and Speaker. Speaker: Courteney Smith (Assistant Nature Reserve Warden). The speaker will talk about a new nature trail linking Barrow Hill, Fens Pools and Baggeridge Country Parks, to be called the 'Newt Route' as it is centred around the conservation of amphibian wetlands.
